On Monday 20th April 09 we have IT for the confused beginners at 9:30 a.m., English and Maths at 1:00 p.m. and our new Crafty Friends Group at 3:00 p.m. where you can learn or teach crafts such as knitting, sewing, crotchet, jewellery making, etc.

On Tuesday 23 March 09 at 12:30 there is Selling On Line beginning where you will learn all you need to know about buying and selling online, how to upload photographs of goods for sale, internet safety, setting up a paypal account and so on.

Tuesday 21st April at 9:30 a.m. we have Using your Digital Camera work work, rest or play!!Whether you use your camera in a work or fun capacity, come along and learn how to use all the functions on your camera, practice and take some fun happy snaps in class, and upload to the computer and learn how to save and store your memories.

Again on a Tuesday, the 24th March at 5:30 p.m we have PC Maintainence where you will learn over 8 weeks how to solve diagnostic problems, add extra RAM and basically pull your computer apart and know how to put it back together again!!

And brand new and exiting we have the SOCIAL NETWORKING CLASS starting on Wednesday 22 April 09 from 12:30 - 3;00 pm for 6 weeks. In this new class you can learnhow to find reliabe information on the internet, Support children online, Online shopping, Online banking & financeIts all useful info, What is social networking? Facebook, Flickr and Yuotube.

Student Winners

At the Action Resource Centre, the Photoshop 3 students were set an assignment by their DACE tutor Brian Morris to design an invitation to our community Christmas celebration event.......

The class set off to work on their designs and within a 2 hour class they completed thier work. And here are two of the winners who will now have this work printed back to back for the flyers which will be sent out to the Portmead, Blaenymaes, Penplas and surrounding areas - they were Karen Edwards and Maralyn McKenna.... well done to both.
The even is on 12th December from 11- 3 with Portmead and Blaenymaes school choirs doing some carol singing along with our own songwriting group, who will be performing their first 'gig'. 3 DACe tutors will be doing ICT workshop session, there will be a 'skype' session and the launch of our ability net disability equipment. A raffle will also take place and there will be a lovely buffet lunch provided by Cafe ARC.

Play Champion

For their achievements in the field of Information Technology Foundation Certificate, pictured here are some of the graduated students... Basic Skills

Hi everyone
Normally the basic skills courses end during the summer holidays and recommence in September. This year the Lifelong Learning department have had funding to continue their service with us through the summer holidays. Please can you pass on this information to anyone you may feel benefit. Even if people are attending basic skills in other venues, they may feel that they could benefit from attending extra classes during the summer with us.

The class is every Monday from 1 – 3 p.m. and anyone can drop in to attend. An assessment is completed on arrival to see what level to work at and then continue to work at their own pace. The subjects are Maths and English – entry level, up to Level 3.

Also we have an IT beginners class commencing on July 28th for 4 weeks, FREE of charge. Times: 10 – 12:30 p.m.

Adult Learners Week

Today at the ARC we had a free taster session of SKYPE for Adult Learners Week. We set up our laptops with webcams and headsets and gave demonstrations on how to use skype, the benefits and then let people have some fun with contacting eachother in the room. Over 20 people came along and had a laugh in the process. Great stuff... so download skype now on http://www.skype.com/ for details and set yourself up with an account and chat for free with other skype users. Its great if you have family living away - both of you download skype and you can see eachother on cam, talk like a phone line all for free.

Its Mothers Day - but I got up bright and early to go and watch Nicky and Owen take part in the fun run which is to raise money to support and motivate Nicky's mate Sam, who was involved in an accident which left him paralised. They started at 9:30 this morning at Mumbles Pier and run to ynystawe Cricket ground. I met them at County Hall - and what a sight... lovely to see Nicky in his FAME suit - he was about 5 mins in front of Owen - well done

Play Champion

As a result of working with Bridging the Policy Gap and Swansea's Play Stratergy - the next step has been to have a meeting to look at 'Play Champions' and whether or not there is a need for them, and if so, what is the role of the champion?
Would a play champion be someone to be the middle man as a voice for children, to pass their ideas, concerns etc onto the authorities or would it be someone that promotes play and raises awareness of the importance of play? We came up with many ideas of what kind of person a champion would be... but if you have any ideas or suggestions please leave your comments.

Trip to Glasgow

Last Thursday a group of 11 of us went to Glasgow for the final conference of Bridging the Policy Gap. This was a really interesting conference, where participants from Glasgow, London Borough of Newham and the City & County of Swansea were able to talk and share experiences about the projects they have been involved in.
Swansea was involved in re-writing the play strategy, the London Borough of Newham looked at employment access for disabled people and Glasgow focused on the Working for Families Fund.
There were Ministers from Scotland and UK listening to what our experiences have been and I had to get up on the platform to say what my experience was. For me to have grass roots communtiy members, working on policies with business, council and voluntary sector organisations and government ministers, is the best way forward, as the people at the top are able to listen and experience what real life people face on benefits, living in poverty, facing unemployment, being unable to access services and the correct benefits - this process has really made them sit up and listen. Also, for the 3 cities to share their experiences and work together, visiting eachothers projects in the peer reviews was great as we can learn from each other - and it doesnt matter where we live, in what part of the country, we all same to face the same issues.
This was all very educational for me and I have been privaliged to be a part of this process. It is not over, even though it was the final conference, as Swansea's Anti Poverty Department within the City & County of Swansea is moving things forward with a take up campaign being piloted in my area (Blaenymaes) and there will be an event on April 17th (watch this space) and i have also been invited to be 'play champion' and will be attending a meeting next week to find out the role of a play champion.
So it wasnt all about having a free jolly ride on a plane to Glasgow, staying in a posh hotel and eating lush food and going to the pub - but that did help. And even better than that - we shared a plane with all the rugby scots fans on the way home, and we beat them hands down on Saturday - bring on the Grand Slam!!!

Next community development team meeting

28th February 2008 with a 12:30 p.m. BUFFET start, followed by our bi-monthly meeting at 1:00 p.m. At this meeting we will be joined by special guests of Morriston Phoenix Choir to talk about what they can offer our community and give us a couple of songs!! Should be really good fun. So come along.

This will be followed at 3:00 p.m. with our PACT meeting - with the Police and Housing dealing with any issues that you wish to bring to their attention.

Blaenymaes Singing Group

i went to Plas Melyn old age complex this afternoon to watch the Blaenymaes singing group give a couple of songs to their very first audience. They sang 2 songs with no backing music, and harmonised very well... they were good. Then they got everyone to join in singing and learning 'sentimental journey'. There was a lovely buffet to follow and chat with the old gents and ladies about life in the past... great fun!!

Take up campaign

Today I attended the 'Take Up Campaign' meeting at the ARC where the room was FULL of service providers who were there to find out about this campaign. Karen Grunhut from the Anti Poverty department of the city and county of Swansea, gave an outline of what all this is about. And basically its about an event that will take place in Blaenymaes Community Centre on 17th April to raise awareness of local residents, to see if they are aware of the services they can access and whether they are in receipt of the right benefits. But it is not just about money, as i said its about accessing services too.
So with all the service providers knowing about what every one else does, and can provide etc. in a directory they can work better in partnership with local residents in Blaenymaes to improve life - so watch this space for further info on the Take Up Campaign!!!

Work out your footprint

At our sustainability workshop yesterday we looked online to calculate our footprints. If every one in the world lived like me - how many planets would we need to get our resources. Its really good fun to to see the seriousness of the issues we face when looking sustainability, recycling, environmental issues, travel and so on... and i should be ashamed of myself as if everyone lived like me we would need 4 planet earths to keep us going.....but, we only have one planet earth so we should treat it well and wisely. A new year begins

Happy New Year to you all.
Well 2008 is here and its been a busy time so far and we are only into the first week. I have been busy with the team finalising things for Lottery bid to continue our digital community network projet and secure the 4 existing job... so we hope to send this application off next week.
I have had a meeting with Open College Network as the ARC is to become a registered centre and the staff, once trained, will be delivering OCN courses at a variety of levels in a variety of subjects to attract more new learners. So watch this space!!
The courses in IT are continuing with a range of subjects on offer at the moment, such as Word and File Management, Internet and Email, Digital Camera, Back up and Burn plus more, and we also have our usual English and Maths class, English for Speakers of other languages (ESOL) and a new business studies module commencing tomorrow (Friday 11 Jan) in personnel. Anyone interested come along and join this 7 week class.
At the Drop in centre i have organised a sustainability workshop, which will look at making your centre greener and you will learn about energy efficiency, carbon footpints, recycling and reusing and it is going to be good fun, with a visit thrown in if your good!!
Credit Union is still running every Thursday morning, with my mate Sue as the new volunteer who is loving her voluntary work in their main office in town too. So if you wish to start saving for a rainy day, call in and find out more.

Merry Christmas From BPP Development Trust

All the staff and volunteers from the BPP Development Trust went for Christmas lunch yesterday and an enjoyable time was had by all..... until Michael had a bit of glass in his trifle. Luckily he spotted it before he actually put it in his mouth!!!!

It was great to see a full turn out and Anthony was sitting at the head of the table, smiling to himself, and I asked what was he smiling at, his reply was "I'm just looking down the table thinking how proud i am of you all" - what a lovely thing to say.

School Play

Today I went to see my boy in the school nativity play, he was a villager who played instruments and wondered around the village on the stage. He was really nervous for weeks, and was refusing at one point to be on stage or even dress up... so the fact that he did it, i was so proud.

Internet and Email 8 week course to learn how to find things on the internet, to satisfy your curiosity or to save money, and use email fully. Include material from the internet in your word documents and send documents attachments to your email. Use the internet to shop or book holidays. Two classes starting on Monday 14th January (9:30 – 12:00) and Tuesday 22nd January (12:30 – 3:00) in the Action Resource Centre (ARC) 45 Broughton Avenue, Portmead.

Personnel module of the HE certificate of Business Studies 7 weeks course commencing 11th January 9:30 – 12:30 at the Action Resource Centre, 45 Broughton Avenue, Portmead. This FREE module provides an introductory study of personnel management matters that affect the way in which organizations operate. It offers basic insight into areas students will need to appreciate with regards to a business environment, although they may not always be directly involved. It will illustrate how personnel and employment matters impact on the operating environment of individuals within business.

ESOL – English for Speakers of other languages – come along to the Action Resource Centre (ARC) to learn how to speak and write English, learn grammar and citizenship FREE for all those who don’t have English as their first language. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 14th January 08.

PC Surgery – A FREE service for all who are having computer problems, whether it is hardware, software, anti virus problems and much, much more. Every Wednesday 1:30 – 4:30 at the Action Resource Centre, 45 Broughton Avenue with our system support technicians and trained volunteers.

Pre GCSE Maths and English available to all adults to brush up on Maths and Literacy. It is FREE and is great if you want to help your children with homework, brush up on skills you have forgotten since you left school, ideal for gaining more skills to find a job. Every Monday 1:00 – 3;00 at the Action Resource Centre, 45 Broughton Avenue, Portmead from January 14th 08.

Back up and Burn is an 8 week course available at the Action Resource Centre, 45 Broughton Avenue, Portmead. Come along and learn how to put your text, photos, music and video to disc. How to store all your important information safely. Commencing 22 January at 5:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Café ARC is a lovely community café, situated in the heart of the Portmead community on Broughton Avenue, which provides a wide range of tasty food including healthy options, breakfasts, baguettes, snacks, hot and cold drinks plus a delivery service and buffet service available. Techno Day at the ARC

The day for the technology fair finally arrived, after a lot of hard work and preparation from the Digital Community Network team. The aim of the day is to showcase new forms of technology, to all local residents within our community - and to see what people already know about and what they want to learn more about.

There were 61 people through the doors of the ARC at 4pm, with many waiting patiently for the time to come. A represnetative from Currys store in Fforestfach came along with a 32" HD ready TV and a PS3 with games. He held a competition to see who could car race around a track the fastest, and the winner was Richard Punchard aged 11 form Portmead - who won an mp3 player - WELL DONE RICHARD!!!

We had many youngsters play with the latest Nintendo Wii, and dance the afternoon away with the PS2 dance mats. There were others making funny photo pictures on the apple mac, and pumping out music with garage band. Many people also left some wild and wonderful messages in our video diary room too.. which i have yet to view!

Community Progression

Myself and the Digital Community Network team attended the University of Wales, Swansea's Community Progression Meeting today, which discusses curriculum development for free courses throughout a wide range of communities across South Wales.
The DCN team intorduced themselves and gave an overview of what the project is about and promoted the technology fairs that are soon to follow, and promoted PC surgery that is on every week in our partner centres. The digital outreach workers, Claire and Owen will also be helping the community progression team gather video footage for evaluating the project as its due to end in June 08.
Community Progression provide free courses and currently at the ARC we have the Foundation in Information Technology course (FIT) and in January 08 we will be starting with the Personnel module of the HE in Business Studies. This will be 7 weeks every Friday from 9:30 - 12:30 - any one interested contact Debbie Jones on 01792 578632.

Environment & Sustainability ....Become Green

Myself, Tricia Morgan and Phil McDonnell had a meeting today to look at becoming a greener organisation and give hints and tips for individuals to become more aware of being environmentally friendly.
The outcome was that the Community Progression Project of Swansea University will put on a 5 week workshop session at the Drop In Centre, Blaenymaes in the New Year to work with volunteers, residents and staff to raise awareness on being green and to write a sustainability policy.
These are some of the things that they will be looking at:

Save energy at home: insulate your lofts and walls, switch off lights and appliances when not in use (dont leave on standby), fit low energy light bulbs.
Save water in the home: fix leaks and drippings taps quickly, fit hippo bag in your toilet cistern or install a low flush toilet, take a shower rather than a bath.
Be a greener gardener: Install a water butt and use rain water on your garden, compost kitchen and garden waste, grow your own vegetables and fruit.
Travel more sustainably: Walk or cycle for short distances, use public transport or share lifts, avoid travelling by air.
Be a green shopper: Choose low energy and recycled products, choose products from ethical and sustainably managed sources 9eg fairtrade and FSC wood), buy local goods and services to reduce food miles and transport.
Waste less: Choose products with less packaging and say no to plastic carrier bags, repair and re-use clothing, furniture etc 9donate unwanted goods to local charities), use local kerbside recycling schemes and recycling centres.
Improve your local environment: Never drop litter and be a responsible dog owner, report fly tipping, graffiti and vandalism, respect your neighbours, avoid excessive noise or garden fires.
Support renewable energy: change to a green tariff for your electricity supply, install a solar panel to heat water for your home, use rechargable batteries rather than disposables.
Support wildlife: avoid using pesticides and herbicides, create a wildlife area or pond in your garden and install a nest box or bat box, choose environmentally friendly washing detergents.
Get more involved: Join a local environmental or community group, volunteer to help manage a local nature reserve or park, find out more about sustainability and the enviroment eg join a training course or visit your local environment centre.
Recycle as much as you can (paper, card, toner cartridges etc)
Buy Fairtrade goods.

I have been on annual leave for a week and most of that time has been spent learning all about http://www.facebook.com/. What a laugh - I have been superpoking everyone in site. But my best time of all has been spent on iLike Music doing the challenge of 'name that tune' sort of thing. You get points for naming the tune or the artist within a time limit... i m rather rubbish but i have the highest score so far... if you think you can beat me, give it a go.
Face book is for fun, but its amazing what you can do.. i have a vampire, a werewolf, a slayer and a furry friend, a fish tank and a garden that i tend to daily.... you can challenge me, feed my friends and send me a beer.

Clase Caemawr Lead Field Day

Today myself, Owen, Nicky and Michael went to brave the freezing cold weather in a field in Clase to join in the awareness raising of a field between Clase and Caemawr. This site is an historical site that they have secured funding to preserve.. and many trees and other environmental projects will be taking off here in the future. The day was filled with activities such as leaf mobile making, bird house making, mashmallow roasting around the fire and shelter making. The day was made with the lovely voices of Morriston Phoenix Male Voice Choir singing modern and tradional songs.. they were amazing.
I took lots of pictures of the day, (photos) and owen did some brill video work with the kids. Even got me singing baa baa black sheep on camera with one of the kids filming me!!! Nicky and Michael showed off their skills on whats inside a pc, and Owen also showed the art of using the Mac.
It was a cold but really good day. (More pictures)

Bridiging the Policy Gap

I have attended a meeting to finalise Swansea's Play Strategy and we have all agreed on some recommendations and hey presto - it should be complete. The final report for bridging the policy gap will be presented in Glasgow next February in the Bridging the Policy gap meeting.
At the meeting myself and another community member Victoria were asked if we would be the 'play champions' so i suppose that is an honour!!
Karen Grunhut from the anti poverty department of the council will be doing a presentation to the community development team on December 13th at the ARC at 1230 (lunch) meeting starts at 100pm - all welcome.

Personnel Course of HE Cerificate in Business Studies

In january 08 we will be doing a new module of personnel which is part of the HE Certificate in Business Studies, so for all those in business or looking to go into that field of work, this would be a very beneficial course to attend. Technology Fair

I have been really busy with helping to organise some businesses to come along to our technology fair at the ARC on Thursday 22 November from 4- 6 pm. Come along we hope it should be really good fun.
I have been to visit a range of businesses and have had a definate yes from CURRYS on Pontardulais Road, parc Fforestfach... and hoping that some others with join us.. but im not naming them until they say yes too!!!
Spark Blaenymaes Youth worker Ioan and development worker Phil will be joining us, adn Graham Davis from the Council Youth service will be there too.. and we will be playing with all the latest digital technology, there will be games, singing, podcasting, and much much more (I hope)
I have been out and about all around Portmead, Blaenymaes, Caereithin and Fforestfach delivering flyers and leaflets to promote the event so i am really hoping with that and my mass email to all that we will have a good turn out.

DOVE is so peaceful

Myself and Anthony went up to DOVE yesterday to have a meeting about education provision, and it was great to see their beautiful garden and the hilly surroundings. It must be so great to work there! Its so peaceful.
Also great to hear how well pc surgery is doing there with Mike and the volunteers, they are doing great and drawing in new volunteers. We are now looking at organising a Xmas event for the volunteers to all get together and meet and with luck DOVE will have room for us over Xmas.

I have been busy out and about visiting retail stores in the Parc Fforestfach areas in preparation for our Technology Fair on 22 Nov. I paid a visit to Curry, Carphone Warehouse, Boots and Argos. All were very keen with the ideas but have to ask the powers that be in offices above. So I am hopeful that we will get the latest gadgets at our fair, to share with you all.
I have also been in touch with Target Ariels to see if they wish to join us and teach us all there is to know about digital switch over with our tv stations, what ariels we need, all there is to know about digiboxes and hopefully they will be on board too.
Just a little bit more letter writing, chase up with visits and phone calls and it should be sorted.
Its nice to be let loose!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Technology Fairs

The DCN team have been very busy organising and planning the latest technology fair. Swansea will be having its fair on November 22nd from 3- 6 pm at the ARC, 45 Broughton Avenue, Portmead (578632).
We hope to have many people young and old from the community at the technology fair to look at what forms of technology is available today. Anything from the pc software, to digital camera, learn how to blog ( just like me ), sing on line and create your very own fan club, what is an ipod for, check out the latest in mobile phones, and what on earth is a wee .... i mean a Wii.
With lots of persuation we are hoping to entice some local business to join in our fun and bring along their latest games consoles, mobiles digiboxes.
What happens when analogue tv goes off next year??? Confused, then come along and learn all about it... it will be so much fun.
So dont forget to mark the date in your diary - 22 November 07 from 3 - 6 pm!!!

Glasgow Trip

On the 9th 10th and 11th of October i flew off to Glasgow with Karen from the anti poverty team, to a Bridging the Policy Gap peer review meeting. What is this is here you say!!!
Europe has a strategy to tackle poverty and the UK is involved in this - well particularly 3 key areas - Glasgow, Swansea and the London Borough of Newham.
Swansea is looking at the Play Stratergy
Newham is looking at employment for the disabled
and Glasgow is looking at the Working for Families Project
Each area is evaluated by the other 2 areas to see what is working, what is not working, who can participate, who cant, future funding, things to improve etc. It is an excellent process as we are all suffering the same issues of high unemployment, low academic achievments, to get people back into work, education or training, housing issues, debt and money issues, childcare problems, transport issues and much much more.
Another reason this is a good process is it is not just about policy makers sitting making decisions about things they know nothing about. There is partnership working from everyone from Government to local government, to local service providers, voluntary organisations and most important of all the service users, clients and community members.... the people on the ground who know what all the barriers are, and how good or bad things actually work.

It was not just some free holiday and skive away from the office, believe me it was hard work. We didnt arrive until 930 pm and then the following days meetings and presentations went on until 7pm which was followed by a group meal back at the hotel, where you continued to talk about work until 10pm before you started again the following morning at 830 am - then to carry on all day before your night flight back to Cardiff at 9pm (with a load of drunken young Glasweigens!!!) - and arrived home at 1130pm!!!! A LONG 2 days. The final report will be presented in Feb 08.

Accessible Technology in Communities

The RNIB have sent me information about ICT training that is available for community providers of ICT. There is funding available for this training made available by Communities@One which your organisation may be eligible for full funding of the ATIC Training. The programme will give you all you need to need to enable you to make your training and equipment accessible to blind and partially sighted people in your community. The programme will last for 6 days over a 4-6 week period. It will cover:

An introduction to the project and how you can help make a difference
Visual awareness training - to provide you with further information on sight loss issues
Throw away the Mouse - using your computer with the keyboard alone
Training in a range of accessible technology solutions including Jaws and Supernova

Bridging the Policy Gap

I have been attending meetings and conferences about Bridging the Policy Gap which is a European Strategy to tackle poverty. The Swansea group met with visitors from Glasgow and the London Borough of Newham in the Pheonix Centre and we had 2 very productive days about the Play Strategy.
I will be going to Glasgow next week for further meetings. The play strategy is all about how to have an effective policy on play, to enable children to play safely, with adventure, to learn to make mistakes and learn from them, to be given the freedom to play, to have access for ALL children regardless of race, disability, etc. It is important that service providers communicate and work in partnership together to have the best outcomes for children's play.
I have found these meetings very interesting. We did an exercise about what we did, and where we played when we were children. I drew a picture of trees, woods, river, lots of friends and outdoor imaginative play. If you think about what children do today - there is such a difference... children are not given the freedom to go out and be adventerous with out being told off, without having adult supervision, or being allowed to make mistakes. They are wrapped up in cotton wool! There is also all the new technology thats available, where children spend hours on end on computers, play stations, and talk to their mates on mobile phones - rather than meet them face to face and have fun out in the fresh air... how times have changed.
I was out from morning til night, with out my parents having picnics in the woods, playing hide n seek over the park, and never got into trouble - should we allow kids to have the freedom I had? People say about strangers lurking about and the dangers of sex offenders - but they were always there even when i was a child, but its just made more public these days. What is your opinion on children's play today?

I've been slipping its catch up time now - as i havent blogged for a few weeks.

I have been working with my team on a funding application for future money for the digital community network, and its really brain work... drives me nuts.

We have had our annual carnival in Blaenymaes and i was Romany Gypsy D. Marie for the day, and i had a queue for the day reading tarot cards - it was so funny - my tent nearly blew over!!!

This week courses have started back and but things have been a bit slow as some of the students who promised to turn up havent!!! So its advertising time again, as the university have put their numbers up this year - and they will not run a course unless there are 10 students, but may get away with 8 if we are lucky... so roll up, roll up for courses.

I have also been attending a few meetings about Child Poverty and the Play Strategy - which has been really interesting and will be meeting the rest of the countries representatives this week, in the Phoenix Centre, Townhill - they will be coming from Newham and Glasgow.

There has been so much going on, this is about all i can catch up with right now. Enjoy the photos on flickr....

My daughters off to college

Exam result day - my duaghter had 6 B's and 3 C's - well done eh!!!! My daughter had the highest mark in the school for Business Studies and she has now been accepted into Swansea College's NEW finance academy - which is a 2 year course - at the moment the only girl accepted, but has been assured there will be maybe 2 others joining her!! I took her for lunch at Pizza Hut for a little treat - just the 2 of us.

Well the day has come that life begins!! Last night I went for a lovely meal at Zaika in St Helens Road and it was fab.. but i havent laughed so much in a long time, i nearly wet myself i laughed so much, when my skeeming daughter came in with a birthday cake that everyone in work had organised. Turns out Julie had been down my house on her day off with my daughter wading through my thousands of photos to find one to put on my cake, I couldnt believe what they had done, no one has ever done this for me before. And then when i got home my house was plastered in banners and balloons saying midlife crisis 40 today!!! My mate Mandy had plotted that one with my daughter too.

I have had some lovely presents so far - a gold locket, a top, shoes, 2 cherrished teddies, gold earrings, 2 bottles of vodka, 2 bottles of wine (what are they trying to say), money, a 40 keyring, a decorative pillow, a 40 teddy, a 40 wine glass, my cake, a 1967 history DVD, a 'grow your own boyfriend', a joke book for 40 yr olds and a carpenters CD - so far!!!

Ive also been woken up at 4 am to be wished happy birthday from my mate Mandy, and spoken to my boy who is in Glasgow and he sang me happy birthday down the phone, and had a cooked breakfast made for me by Mandy - what else can i say - but no doubt the day can only get better!! (Be good if i can get an email or something from my Mum in Peru too - we have to wait and see)

And the plan tonight is there is rather a lot of us hitting Wind Street - i wonder if i will stay sober??????

Mother is safe in Peru

I just wanted to blog this and tag it in case any one else out there was as worried as me. There is a group of 20 from the UK who have gone off to Peru, to tour and visit the rain forest and Macchu Piccu. Due to the earthquake on Thursday I was really worried not knowing which location my Mum was in on that day - so I managed to find her itinery at her house and decided to ring the number of Amazonas Explorer in Peru.
I left a garbled message on this Spanish answer machine, but leaving my telephone number, and then half an hour later got a reply from an english man - to say they were all safe and well and at the time of the quake they were in the jungle 800 miles away.
All flights are back on track so there will not be a problem with them getting back to Lima for the next part of the trip - and to get home. He asked me to pass on messages to the rest of the groups family - but i dont know who they are - so i thought i could do it throught tagging my blog, contacting GMTV, Swansea Sound and Radio One -hopefully you can all now relax - as I am!

Busy week coming up

Well this week is going to be busy: Wednesday from 10-2 we have our enrolment day at the ARC for all the courses available from September onwards. There will be tutors available to talk to and an advice and guidance worker from the University of Wales.
Then also on Wednesday we have our Summer Celebration at 330 where Kev Johns from Swansea Sound will be comparing and the Lord Mayor Cllr Sue Waller will be attending to celebrate the work of the BPP Development Trust and its volunteers. Should be a good one!
Then on Thursday i will be in penlan Community Centre promoting the work of the ARC - as they are including us, as work in the Penderry ward. Here there is a nice BBQ to be had too.
Then Im off for a nice long weekend to celebrate or depress myself about being the big 40!!!
I am having a meal at Zaika in St Helens Road on Friday night - any one wishing to join me - get in touch - the more the merrier.

Today the sun was shining on Swansea again, and me and my mates and kids took off to sunny Blackpill - which was absolutely packed full of sunbathers, park rides, bouncy castle, chips, ice creams and a freezing cold paddling pool. But great fun was had by all.. may the sunshine continue - but according to the weather forecast 2 minutes ago Im afraid more rain is on the way. Im looking like a bit of a lobster at the moment and slightly burnt, but I really dont mind the tanned look!

Cameron found it quite amusing to stoll around the park in my mates daughters wheelchair, looking like the charector from 'Little Briton' - I was hysterical. Oh well back to work Monday and Cam is off to Glasgow for a week.

Here comes summer

What a great day today was - me and my boy went on a lovely sunny day out. I had a little trip down memory lane when i parked outside my old bedsit in King Edward Road, remembering the launderette, pub and the telephone box (which was mine - and has now gone!!) Then we went off to Victoria Park for our picnic, setting out the blanket and range of food, we had a lovely time basquing in the sun. Cam had a game of footie with a couple of lads and their grand dad, then the whole park got invaded by a sworm of kids wearing blue t-shirts, from bonymaen kids initiative....so after having a nose at why there was a paramedic by the old men playing bowling we went off to the beach. Sat with a nice ice cream cone, and got chatting again to more friendly folk of Swansea... and what a small city this is - turns out the person i was talking to was the mother of someone i was in primary school with - how amazing!! Her grandaughter and Cam went off to the sea for a paddle and played hide n seek before heading off home.... and as i type - where is Cam.... FASTO sleeping in the car ZZZzzzzzzz worn out.

Lisa in work told me she went to Bracelet Bay near Mumbles on Sunday and saw some dolphins and a seal.... well, I thought that would be a nice day out for me and my kids, so off we went. We couldnt find any dolphins or seals, just some seagulls!! So Cameron had to ring Lisa to ask her if she was imagining them!! All the same we had a lovely time - Im on holiday all week - hope it stays sunny!

Sustainability Is SO interesting

Today we had a training session with Phil McDonnell about sustainability - and it was so interesting. I have learnt that there are European Packaging regulations that state that you can take your shopping packaging back to the shop - thats great - save me on black bags. But whats more important that i have learnt is that i am not environmentally friendly at all. By travelling to work in my car, or going on holiday, not switching my lights off, leaving my appliances on standby, eating meat and not recycling I am having a very damaging effect on the Earth. There is only one Earth and so many people taking from it, that it is running out of resources. So if we ALL become more aware of how to be more sustainable - the Earth will become a better place to live and last longer!!
There is a conductor used in mobile phones which is obtained from a south American country and to obtain this, it has an effect on gorillas in the jungle. When you buy roses the worker in the poor countries only get about 0.07p wages from a £2.00 bunch. There is SO much to learn about the way our behaviour and lifestyles effect the Earth - its not enough to have a half day session.
The plan is now to invite more professional people to the next session - all you local partners and agencies, so you can become more aware of how to make a difference, so we can all pass this information down onto the community members.
The next session will be organised for sometime in September (after Phil comes back from Peru), and you will be surprised on how VERY interesting all this informtion is. If there is enough interest then, we at the ARC could put on a taster course or even a foundation course. Watch this space for further infomation.

Off to the printers

I managed to sort out the Learning at the ARC newsletter and get it converted to a pdf file but i must admit it took quite some time...i needed assistance from the technical team to resize my pictures. So its off to the printers and we will be getting them delivered this Wednesday - so it will be busy again will a full on mail out!!
I have been printing lots of invitations to our enrolment day and copies of the timetable for Lisa to put in her big CDT mailout (the enrolment day is August 15th from 10 a.m. til 2 p.m.)
Feeling rather sleepy now as its Monday afternoon - post lunchtime and im still recovering from my weekend of dancing and singing (to celebrate my mates birthday!!)

I have been trying to complete my education newsletter but cant seem to convert it to send to the printers, and its driving me nuts.
We have our regular BEBO girls come in to chat on line all day - but other than that it is causing droopy eyelids in the office!!

Just spent some time catching up on Owens blog and i think his idea of dressing up for work is a brill idea... imagine the fun!! Also, my daughter is gonna be so jealous when i tell her Owen has the latest Harry Potter book, as so far she has had them all, seen all the films but was not prepared to queue up dressed as a witch outside a bookstore or supermarket for hours just to get a copy - but please dont reveal all as she intends to get a copy.
Me personally - never seen the films or read the books, maybe i should after all the raving about them.

So what its raining.. ive had so much fun!

What a great weekend. Yes, its rained lots and lots and lots, but never mind. I polished, hoovered, washed walls, did washing, dishes, made beds, put all the clothes away... all the usual house hold stuff - then went to a kids party in my street and ate some lush African dishes and watched some mad people dance... they knew how to party! Then spent the night curled up on the sofa watching a great film 'The Emerald Forest'.
Today i was up bright and early cooking my wonderful Sunday dinner, cleaned up straight away and then chilled for the best part of the day by playing bejewelled (most addictive game ever) on http://www.popcap.com/ and then decided to make some pasties and sausage rolls.. but as you can see from the pictures i took, they didnt look too bad when in the oven - but then the big pastie kinda fell to bits when i put it on a plate... hey Delia Smith where did i go wrong - i followed her instructions from her cookery website and they never looked like this on her pictures... oh well let them cool and see how they taste... if im off sick tomorrow you know why.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1940’S, 50’S. 60’S AND 70’S·

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and /or drank while they carried us.·

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn’t get tested for diabetes.·

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.·

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitch-hiking.·

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.· Riding in the back of a van – loose – was always great fun.·

We drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle.· We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.·

We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but we weren’t overweight because…· WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!·

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.· No one was able to reach us all day – and we were ok.·

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scrap and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot our brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.·

We didn’t have playstations, nintendos, x-boxes, no viveo games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no internet or internet chat rooms… WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!·

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.·

We played with worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.·

Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out any eyes.·

We rode bikes or walked to a friends house and knocked on the door or rang the bell or just yelled for them!·

Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!·

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. The actually sided with the law!·

This generation has produced some of the best risk takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!·

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.· We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!· And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!·

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were. · Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors doesn’t it!

Unfortunatley my kids were born at the wrong time, but this makes me think!!

I have just read through all the blogs that are linked to me, and why is it that people are not blogging as much as they were in the beginning? Are you working too hard? Have you forgotten you log in and password? Are you so lazy doing nothing that you have nothing to blog? Come on ... what is your reason - please dont stop blogging, Im so enthused by reading all the blogs, they make me laugh, they make me smile (Really enjoyed reading Jeanettes blog just now!!) I have just returned from Portmead School's Infant Sports day - and fun was had by all - especially my son, as he won 4 out of the 5 events!! Well done.

Poverty and Play

I attended a meeting Tuesday in the Healthy Living Centre in Winch Wen - when I eventually found it - to talk about play stategies and how poverty affects play (Bridging the Policy Gap). When we think of poverty we just think of money usually but it means not having enough of - and our 'bridging the policy gap' group is looking at the play stategy to see what works and what is missing - we are doing a lot of hard work and will be linking with others in Newham and Glasgow as its part of an EU stategy to eradicate child poverty - so I hope what we contribute will have good outcomes for the future of our children.
I have been asked to find out if any other voluntary sector groups or agencies wish to be a part of the review - and this would benefit anyone who is involved with 'play or youth work' etc - please get in touch with Karen.grunhut@swansea.gov.uk Some people who attended the launch were under the impression this was just about different types of poverty - but now this group is only concentrating on the PLAY STRTERGY. Please help if you can. (My day as then finished with a session at Mc Donalds and Ravenhill Park with my son)

Yes!! I managed to figure out transferring images from my phone again, I had to install the software again, as Id lost it. so I thought i would share these lovely trees at Clyne Gardens with you - its amazing!

I think I should take up woodwork and see if i could sculpture a tree like this in my garden!

In my TRIO class today - i think i learnt how people can subscribe to my blog. I can go onto the feedburner.com site and check out who has been viewing me and hopefully if i make a new entry - you wil be alerted to have a look at whats new on my site. I really am not sure if i have done this properly, I was have to have a chat with the digital wizards!! (Owen and Claire).
The TRIO project is really confusing me and im not sure as to whether or not i am up to completing this course, as it needs quite a bit of time spent on it, which i dont seem to have. But I might try and do what i am suppose to do just to complete this module.

The vicar of St Teilo's Church, Padraig Gallagher had a lovely service followed by lunch to celebrate his 25th anniversary since he was ordained in Ireland. Congratulation Padraig, it was a lovely service attended by family, friends and community members.

ESOL provision during summer

English Language Training Services offer free English language classes to any non-native speakers of English during July and August. Details below.
If you are in contact with any overseas visitor, refugee, staff member, student or family of such a non-native speaker who would appreciate free language teaching, please let them know about this.
Free classes run from 3rd July to 27th July and 6th August to 26th August.
Classes run from 1.30 p.m. (13:30) to about 1530 from Monday to Friday.
ALL non-native speakers of English at ALL levels are welcome.
You do NOT need to be part of the university.
You may join the class at any time, for any period of time.
There is no need to pre-book or enrol.
The initial meeting is in Room 248, Keir Hardie Building. All classes are in the Keir Hardie Building, opposite the library.
If you wish to join the class after the start date, to find out the correct room, please:

Stress and Anger Management

I went to a meeting with Hazel Hunter from Swansea University (DACE) yesterday to discuss the possibilites of putting on a taster session on Stress and Anger Management, and to learn techniques on how to manage these feelings. It will initially be a 2 week session but if there is enough interested it could be a full course later. If anyone knows anyone interested in this course, or benefit from it, please contact me - the date and time is yet to be arranged, but it will probably be towards the end of August.

Holiday time again

Well ive been off 3 days this week and its been really busy. I went for a trim at the hairdressers then i ended up decorating my living room and doing a car boot sale at Singleton - i had about 2 hours sleep and was sitting in a queue to get in the boot sale at 4 am thanks to my mate who told me to get there early - well it didnt open til 5 am..... so tired!!

But it went well, the sun was shining and i could have made a lot more money if people didnt want everything for nothing. The rest of the weekend was fit for nothing as i was so tired. But my living room looks nice!! Ive still to put my curtains back up and the voil i bought was too small.. (see pic) so i had to buy more!!! This is where basic skills maths lessons come in handy to measure up properly!!!!!!

So dont throw away your junk - turn it in to cash.

Summer IT Taster Provision

Dont forget - spread the word about our taster sessions starting Monday 16th July from 12:30 - 3:00. IT tasters suitable for beginners to learn how to prepare documents for work, such as letters, CV's and general word processing.
Every Monday and Tuesday afternoon for 7 weeks.

Sustainability Training

I am setting up a training day on sustainability and environmental issues which would benefit all local agencies and partners. The half day training will give orgaisations and all staff members really good ideas to set in place for their workplace.
Phil McDonnell is willing to give a morning session and i am looking to set a date that we can all be available... so i have given 2 options. Either 30th or 31st July from 9:30 - 12:00 - please let me know which is best for you as it is going to be really beneficial for you to all attend.

Community Development Team Meeting

Today was our bi-monthly community development team meeting where residents and agencies get together and meet to discuss what is going on in our community. Today's presentation was by Fiona Williams who talked about Food Co-operatives and the co-op based in the New Drop In Centre. Orders are places for affordable fresh fruit, veg and salad every Wednesday at £2.00 per bag and they are delivered on Thursday. Well worth getting involved to volunteer or purchase!!
Anthony then gave his report and then me and Maggie talked about what work we have been doing and then we had a break...lush buffet!!
This followed by a workshop to help Anthony fill his funding application form in the areas of crime, youth and environment - so this was useful.
Then the police community support officers, Jamie and Sam held their PACT meeting to discuss crime and anti social behaviour in our areas and gave positive feedback and actions set in place to follow up for the next meeting !

One World Concert

Today Anthony and I attended a concert at Blaenymaes School which was dedicated to Mr Carpenter (teacher) who passed away in Easter. The concert featured children aged 6 - 11 who performed poetry, dance, insturmental music and songs - some composed by the children themselves. It was a very lively concert which I thouroughly enjoyed and hope we get invited again in the future.

Well today was like getting my daughter ready for her wedding, but not quite - its prom day!

Daniel James Year 11 pupils who have just left are off in limos to Manor Park in Clydach for a night to remember.

But what a bit of organising it takes.... you need to search the world for the dress of your dreams, order it, then go for fittings, then it has to be altered, then another final fitting.

Then its the shoes and the bling before you even get on to sunbed sessions and spray tans. I had to pick my daughter up from her spray tan yesterday and she can out in her pj's and nothing on her feet!!

Today was false nails at 2:15, then hair at 3pm but the girl who was doing it was decorating and forgot the time and was almost an hour late!!!! (Laura stressed texting me in work)

Then the make up was applyed while having now an audience of me, my mate Mandy and my Mum!! Upstairs i had to help her on with the dress, do up all the criss cross ribbon at the back before setting off for the school.. and all looked absolutely amazing. I was like david bailey - snapping every thing that moved. So she is there now, dancing the night away and i will hear all about it tomorrow as there is a house party to follow and she wont be home til morning.

Having come to a digital camera course, I found that my IT skills were very limited on Mr Ian Jones advice. I enrolled into a file management course and a use your pc effectively course. I found that these courses were interesting and informative and the tutor very helpful and patient.
I woudl have no hesitation in recommending the ARC to anyone wanting to do IT courses - it follows I think that all the courses run there would fall into the same category (also the canteen staff very willing to help you)

This is an excellent centre. I have learnt a great deal and gained a lot of confidence in using a computer. I have found my tutors always helful and patient. I have especially enjoyed the digital community network on a Wednesday morning - these sessions have been fun and very informal. I very much look forward to future sessions at the centre. Monday & Tuesday 12:30 - 3:00 for 7 weeks commencing 16th July.
These taster sessions are suitable for beginners, so come and give it a try!

Our enrolment day for educational courses are on 15th August from 10-2 here at the ARC. Come along and sign up for something to fill your days. There is something to suit everyone, IT for absolute beginners, word and file management, digital photography, selling on line, family history, digital sound, pc maintenence, english, maths, business studies, english for speakers of other languages - and of course we still have our pop in for help sessions with Claire and Owen and our PC Surgery with Nicky and Mike - both on Wednesday's every week at the ARC.

Preparing for Summer Celebration

The Lord Mayor, Kev John, Councillors, A.M.'s and many others have been invited to our summer celebration which is taking place on 15th August to celebrate the work of the Trust and to give recognition to volunteers.
Some of our volunteers have progressed onto become directors and one have gone onto do a University degree. Ex-students have gone on to employment, voluntary work and even had work published in a national magazine. The work of the Trust wouldnt be a success with out these people - and it is to celebrate everyones work.
I have been busy organising the running order and sending out invites! Watch this space as it will be a great day.

TRIO project

Today i am in trio class learning all about blogging - um... i think i know a bit.. im a fanatical blogger and link my pictures to flicker and connect with all my work colleagues blogs too. Its really humerous and if you are looking at my blog for the first time - sorry about the feet pictures but there is a story behind it. LOL :)
Today we also learnt about Wikipedia and had some fun in the class, where logs can be edited by you and others. I made relevant changes to information about Penderry and Blaenymaes.
Then we went into http://oremi.swan.ac.uk/debz33 to learn more about social space. More to follow.

Weekend Sunshine

The sun is shining and its time for Debz to get a tan!! I really hope the sun will hold out all week whilst i am on leave... please please please...
I packed my foot in ice for most of the morning to get some of the swelling down, and then tried on a trainer, and hey - I felt like Cinderella, the shoe fitted. So I jumped in my car - for the first time in 2 months and went off to visit a few friends, before returning to have lunch on my balcony and chat to Claire to make arrangements for the evening.
Owen and his wife Ceri picked me up and drove off to sunny Claires house for a chat, drink and lovely chinese meal, but unfortunatly Michael and Nicky didnt join us. We didnt have a phone number for Mike, so I tried searching him out on 118118 .com and look on the electoral register. I did find him and his wife registered but it didnt give me his street name or telephone number, so even though i would make a good detective, i was unable to contact Mike to join us for our evening, and Nicky was off seeing something in the movies with his girlfriend - i think!
We had a really good night and staff bonding is highly recommended - so more social events please.
On Sunday Julie from the cafe called in for a cuppa and then invited me to go for a strole down Clyne Gardens with her and her Mum, which I did. I have a lovely picture of a face carved out in a tree but i cant seem to get my computer to recognise my mobile phone anymore and i am having problems getting the pictures for you all to see. But it was a boiling hot day, and we walked around admiring the views and watched a squirrel dangle off a washing line.... really funny. That was finished off with an ice cold cola from the Woodman pub....lush!
Today is the first day of my holiday and i am being really lazy - catching up on a few tedious jobs and playing games online, whilst catching up witht the office goss from lisa!!

Busy busy busy

Phew the week has flown, I been really busy but its now Friday afternoon and i am brain dead and cant remember what i have been doing. But I do know that today I began the TRIO project course with the university based here at the ARC. There were 2 members of staff from here, 2 from Spark, and 2 other guys - and a few didnt turn up.
We looked at the history of the internet and www, future technologies, and set up our profiles and generally discussed what would be involved in the 1st module. I really enjoyed it, and have a little homework to do by next Friday.
I am on annual leave next week, but i am sure i will keep you all informed of my activities. About to have our weekly staff meeting with the digital community network team now before knocking off for the weekend.... which i am looking forward to, as we are off to Claire's for a fun games/staff bonding/chineese night...lush!!!

What a site

This is the famous foot now out of plaster after 6 weeks, and believe you me this is looking good compared to what it first did.

The only problem i have now, is i cant get any shoes on and had to be taken to Parc Fforestfach to purchase a pair of wide slippers as I had nothing else to wear. Rather swollen you see!!

When am i going to be able to drive again... plesae let me be mobile again.

Catching up with blogging

Its been a few days now... I'm slipping!! The weekend consisted of bingo and karaoke - my rendition of Fame, We've only Just Begun and Rainy Days and Mondays! Sunday was spent sleeping due to too much alcohol consumption whilst singing!!! (oh dear)
But back to the grindstone Monday with our staff diary meeting followed by an evaluation meeting from staff of Communities@One who fund our DCN Project. Michelle and Paul met with myself, Claire, Nicky and Michael and had a few hours chatting about how our project has been over the last year.... it was a really good meeting and they were impressed with our work.
Today.... wait for it.... I have had my plaster off my foot - what a sight and i cant get my shoe on!!! More to follow! (YUK)

I spent quite a while today selecting work related photos to add to my flickr account. Someone has already added one of my pictures as their favourate (the hidden waterfall) and another was used for a media article on the Welsh Assembly (the Chambers) - so flickr is very handy to help others too.

The only thing is i couldnt figure out how to get this picture to portrait from landscape????
